Our Coaches

Coaching CrossFit in San Antonio is about more than just taking you through the motions. A good coach is highly skilled at technique, the ability to give cues, programing, motivation, and able to handle any situation. A great coach can take all of those things and motivate an athlete to become the highest expression of their strength, power, performance and health. Our coaches aren’t just good, they’re great and they create great athletes.

CrossFit Coach Ryan

Ryan Matthews

Owner / Certified CrossFit Coach

  • CrossFit Level 1
  • CrossFit Football
  • CrossFit Powerlifting
  • USAW Level 1 Sports Coach

Started weight training @ 12 years old. In high school I played football and competed in powerlifting. In powerlifting I won back to back regional titles and my senior year won the Texas State championship in class 4/5A in my weight class. I played football in college and trained under S&C specialists Jared Kaaiohelo at the University of Central Oklahoma. Since then he has lead the S&C programs at Kansas University as well as Rice. Having a coach like that has really helped shape how I approach my training for myself as well as my clients.

Why I enjoy CrossFit? I feel it’s a great all around conditioning tool that test your limits both physically and mentally. The benefits of the two are both equally important. For most, I think it’s rewards go far beyond what takes place in the Box. It helps shape and mold people’s lives for everything that happens in our day to day lives. I know because I see it. People who come in broken and leave with something you can’t put into words. It’s a feeling of self worth and the light that was dim becomes bright like a continuous fire.

Alex Wayman

Alex Wayman

Certified CrossFit Coach

  • CrossFit Level 1

Alex has been a trainer at HeadStrong CrossFit for 2 years. He played football as an offensive lineman at a division 1 junior college in California where he helped his team achieve an undefeated season and a national championship. His football career was cut short his Sophomore year after a severe injury required surgery to repair damage done to both of his knees. After leaving his football career behind and spending several years working in the construction industry, he decided it was time to get back to his athletic roots. After making the move from California to Texas, he began looking for a gym to call home where he could restart his athletic career. He came across HeadStrong CrossFit by chance one day and decided to give it a try. After spending some time with the head coach Ryan Matthews he knew he had found the perfect place to begin again. Since joining HeadStrong, he has had tremendous strength gains. The knowledge that Ryan has to offer pertaining to strength and conditioning is above and beyond any gym he has been to before. After several months of training one-on-one with Ryan, he was asked to become a coach at HeadStrong.

Currently he is a competitive Powerlifter with several 1st place finishes. Aside from being the best coach and powerlifter he can be, he is currently focused on finishing what he started with his football career. He is anticipating his return to NCAA in 2018-2019.
